PostSubject: Kat's YJ Build   Tue Nov 18, 2008 6:40 pm

Ok so the other thread was getting too long and too many things have changed so I'm starting a new one.

The rear is at 61.5" and will go out 1 inch with adaptors and/or will go with a backspacing of 3.25" for the rear wheels. I am going to keep the 8 lug wheels and change the rear to 8 lug.

I need to get 16 or 17" wheels to have enough room for the calipers. Tire sizes are a pain for those sizes - basically going from 36" to 39.5" with nothing in the 37"-38" range between . The best we could find that wasn't too many ply was a 38.5" Super Swamper TSL/SX for 16.5". I like my current TSL and wanted to stick with Super Swamper so this should be good. I'll have to do some fender cutting. I want to go with steel wheels. I'm looking at the Trailready beadlocks. I'm not sure how much I should care that beadlocks aren't street legal.

my big issue with the 17" rim is that at 7psi the rim sits on the folded tire at times while climbing and the rim bashes into the rocks at times.

some of the tires I want to get at some point only come in 17's. I have never had a problem with the rim bottoming out but that might be the 10 ply. I have never an issue with flex either but there is a big difference between 9psi and 7psi with them. The only issue I have had with them is smooth rock

Things that need done:
- the D30 needs pulled
- I need new shocks but don't know what type or size I'll need until I get it back
- need tie rod and drag link built
- ARB needs hooked up to compressor and lines needs run to dash for the switch
- D60 needs installed - it will bolt in. Will my existing brake lines work or will I need new ones?

I'm sure there are things I am forgetting but what I have listed will take a good bit of time even if there are no problems (and we all know there always are).

" if I drill the holes out a little bit"
True pain in the ass to try to do but if you feel up to it then you will save a few bucks.

"need tie rod and drag link built" I will order parts this week. I took measurements and know what I need for the tie rod. For the drag link you will need to have the pitman arm "reamed" to accept a chevy TRE. Reason is the jeep is 11/16 thread and there are no tubing adapters in that size. Dave K. must have drilled mine out, I sorta remember him mentioning that.

"ARB needs hooked up to compressor and lines needs run to dash for the switch"
This is a PITA trying to find a place to run the wires through the firewall but you could do yours like mine near the battery. Dave will give you the parts that come with the ARB locker so you shouldn't have to buy any extra parts for this connection.

"D60 needs installed - it will bolt in. Will my existing brake lines work or will I need new ones?
You will need new u bolts that fit the D60, your existing brake lines may or may not work, depends on length since it is going to be wider. This is something a trip to the parts store once we look at it could take care of.
You will most likely need driveshaft modification, shortened most likely.

"I'm sure there are things I am forgetting "
BEER! and Italian sausage on the grill.

Ok - answers:

The shocks are bad - I don't know what length or what ends are needed

ARB lines can probably be run through the same hole in the firewall that the hand throttle line went through

I would NEVER forget the beer and sausage...that's just crazy talk!

for shocks just figure where you want to mount them on the axle and measure from bolt hole to bolt hole and make that measurement the center of the range of the shock.
